Protecting Back Teeth in Norwood
Molars and premolars do the heavy chewing, and their tops are full of pits and grooves. Some of those grooves are narrower than a toothbrush bristle. Food and bacteria settle in, and that is where a lot of cavities begin, especially in children.
A sealant fills in those grooves and leaves a smooth surface that is easier to keep clean. At our Norwood office, Dr. Monika Kaceli recommends sealants for many young patients and for adults whose back teeth have deep grooves but no decay.
What Are Dental Sealants?
A sealant is a thin layer of resin material that bonds to the enamel on the chewing surface of a tooth. It comes in clear or tooth-colored shades, so it is hard to notice once it is in place.
Sealants do not replace brushing, flossing or regular cleanings in Norwood. They add a barrier in the one area of the tooth that is hardest to clean.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Sealants?
- Children and teens as their permanent molars and premolars come in
- Kids who have a hard time brushing their back teeth well
- Adults with deep grooves on back teeth that have no fillings or decay
- Patients Dr. Kaceli considers at higher risk for cavities
Sealants work only on healthy tooth surfaces. If a groove already has decay, it needs to be treated first, usually with a tooth-colored filling. Dr. Kaceli will check each tooth at your exam and tell you whether a sealant makes sense.
What to Expect During the Sealant Visit
Placing sealants is one of the easier things we do. There is no drilling and no numbing, which makes it a good first experience for kids.
- CleanEach tooth is cleaned so the sealant can bond directly to the enamel.
- DryThe tooth is kept dry. Moisture can keep the material from bonding well.
- Brush on the sealantThe liquid sealant is painted into the grooves of the chewing surface.
- Cure with a lightA curing light hardens the sealant in about 10 to 20 seconds per tooth.
- Check the biteDr. Kaceli checks how your teeth come together and makes small adjustments if anything feels high.
- Home-care instructionsYou get simple tips for keeping sealed teeth clean and what to watch for between visits.
How Long Do Sealants Last?
With good care, sealants can last around 5 to 10 years. Chewing wears them down slowly, and very hard or sticky foods can chip them.
We check every sealant at your regular exam. If one is worn or has a chip, it can usually be touched up or replaced in a short visit.
To help sealants last, avoid chewing ice, hard candy and other very hard items. Keep brushing the sealed teeth as usual, since sealants protect only the chewing surface and the sides of the tooth still need daily cleaning.
Why Choose Kaceli Dental Studio in Norwood?
Dr. Kaceli considers protecting natural tooth structure the most important thing she does, and sealants are about as conservative as dentistry gets. Nothing is removed from the tooth.
Our Norwood team accepts most insurance and can estimate costs ahead of time. Appointments on the third Saturday of each month make it easier to bring kids in outside school hours.
