Healthy Gums Start in the Hygiene Chair
Gum disease rarely hurts at first. Gums may bleed a little when you floss, or look slightly puffy, and that is easy to ignore. Regular cleanings are one of the simplest ways to stop it before it gets that far.
At our Norwood office, hygienist Karolina Urbe, CDA, RDH, puts a lot of weight on teaching patients about gum health. Along with cleaning your teeth, she will show you where plaque tends to collect in your mouth and how to reach those spots at home.
What Happens During a Norwood Cleaning
Plan for about 30 to 60 minutes. Here is the usual order of things.
- Plaque and tartar removalYour hygienist removes soft plaque and hardened tartar from the tooth surfaces and along the gumline.
- Ultrasonic cleaning for larger depositsWhere tartar is heavy, an ultrasonic instrument loosens it so it comes off with less effort.
- Detail work with hand instrumentsHand instruments clean between teeth and around tight spots the ultrasonic tip cannot fully reach.
- PolishingA polish leaves the teeth smooth and removes surface stains from coffee, tea and everyday eating.
- Optional fluorideIf you want extra protection against decay, we can finish with a fluoride treatment in Norwood.
Most hygiene visits are paired with a dental exam with Dr. Monika Kaceli, so you leave with clean teeth and a clear picture of your oral health.
Do You Still Need Cleanings If You Floss?
Yes. Good brushing and flossing make a big difference, and patients who keep up with home care usually have quicker, easier cleanings. But nobody reaches every surface every day.
Plaque that gets missed hardens into tartar, and tartar only comes off with professional instruments. It also tends to build up in the same places for each person, often behind the lower front teeth or along the outer side of the upper molars. A cleaning every six months removes it before it can inflame the gums.
Your Mouth and the Rest of Your Body
Dr. Kaceli often tells patients that overall health starts in the mouth. Gum inflammation does not always stay in the gums, and researchers have linked it with other inflammation in the body, including heart health.

If your hygienist finds signs of active gum disease, Dr. Kaceli may suggest a deeper periodontal cleaning. Our periodontist, Dr. Milagros Serrano, can help when more advanced gum care is needed.
Insurance and Cost
The Norwood office accepts most insurance plans. Our team can look at your plan before your visit and estimate any out-of-pocket cost, so you are not guessing.
If you do not have dental insurance, call and ask about pricing. For larger treatment plans, monthly payments are available through Cherry and Sunbit financing.
Why Choose Kaceli Dental Studio in Norwood?
Hygiene visits here are about more than a quick polish. Karolina and the team take time to explain what they see, and nervous patients can ask for a slower pace at any point.
The office is open the third Friday of each month until 6 pm and the third Saturday until 3 pm, so it is easier to fit a cleaning around school or work. Each treatment room has a flat-screen TV to help the time pass.
