Same-Day Emergency Dental Care
Dental emergencies rarely happen at a convenient time. When you call our Newton office with pain or an injury, we'll make room in the schedule to see you the same day whenever we can. The first goal is simple: find the cause and get you out of pain.
Our two offices are open on different days, so between Newton and Norwood there's usually a Kaceli Dental Studio office open during the week. If one is closed, call the other office and the team will help you get seen.
What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
If you're not sure, call us and describe what's going on. We'd much rather hear from you early. Common reasons to call right away include:
- A severe or throbbing toothache
- A tooth that's been knocked out or pushed out of place
- A cracked, chipped or broken tooth
- A lost filling or crown
- Swelling in the gums, face or jaw
- Bleeding that won't stop after an injury or extraction
- A broken or loose denture, bridge or night guard
- Pain after biting into something hard, or after a sports injury
What Happens at Your Emergency Visit
- Call the officeTell us what happened and how long it's been going on. We'll give you a time to come in and advice on what to do until then.
- Find the causeDr. Kaceli examines the area and takes digital X-rays or a 3D image if needed, to check for cracks, infection or root damage that you can't see.
- Relief firstTreatment focuses on stopping the pain and protecting the tooth, whether that's a filling, a temporary crown, draining an infection or smoothing a sharp edge.
- A plan for what's nextIf the tooth needs more work, such as a root canal, a crown or an extraction, we'll explain your options and costs before anything is scheduled.
What to Do Until You Get Here
Knocked-out tooth
Pick the tooth up by the top (the crown), not the root. If it's dirty, rinse it briefly with milk or water without scrubbing. Try gently placing it back in the socket and biting on clean gauze. If that's not possible, keep it in a small container of milk or tucked inside your cheek and call us right away. A tooth has the best chance of being saved within the first hour.
Toothache
Rinse with warm water and floss gently to remove anything caught between the teeth. A cold compress on the outside of your cheek and an over-the-counter pain reliever can help for now. Don't put aspirin directly on your gums, because it can burn the tissue.
Broken tooth, lost filling or crown
Save any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water and avoid chewing on that side. If a crown comes off, keep it and bring it with you. It can often be cleaned and recemented.
Swelling
Use a cold compress on the outside of your face, 15 minutes on and 15 off, and call us. Swelling often points to an infection that needs to be treated, not just waited out.
