A New Root for a Missing Tooth
Most tooth replacements sit on top of something: the gums, or the teeth next to the gap. An implant works differently. A small post goes into the jawbone and takes the place of the root, so the new tooth is anchored the way a natural one is.
Implant posts are made from titanium or another biocompatible material. Over a few months, the bone grows around the post and holds it firmly.
Planning Implants With 3D Imaging
Where an implant goes, and at what angle, makes a big difference. Our Norwood office has CBCT 3D cone-beam imaging, which rotates around your head for about 30 seconds and gives Dr. Kaceli a 360-degree view of your teeth, bone and surrounding structures. That view is used for implant planning and placement accuracy.
The scan uses a low dose of radiation. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, tell Dr. Kaceli before any imaging.
Implant Options at Our Norwood Office
- Implant-retained crowns replace a single missing tooth with one implant and one crown.
- Implant-retained bridges use implants as supports for a row of replacement teeth, so neighboring teeth don't need to be shaped.
- Implant-supported dentures attach a full or partial denture to implants, so it stays put when you eat and talk.
Not sure which you need? See how these compare with dental bridges in Norwood and dentures.
Getting Ready for an Implant
Some patients need work done before the implant. A broken or failing tooth may have to come out first, and if the bone has thinned, a bone graft can build it back up.
Periodontist Dr. Milagros Serrano, DDS, is part of our team. She is a certified LANAP clinician whose focus includes dental implants, bone augmentation and soft tissue grafting.
What to Expect, Visit by Visit
- ConsultationDr. Kaceli examines your mouth, talks through your goals and explains your options.
- 3D imaging and planningA CBCT scan maps your bone so the implant position can be planned.
- PlacementThe implant post is placed under local anesthesia. Sedation is available if you would like it.
- HealingThe bone fuses with the post over a few months. For a single implant crown, this is usually about two to three months.
- Abutment and restorationAn abutment is attached, impressions are taken, and your crown, bridge or denture is fitted.
Caring for Your Implant
Brush and floss around an implant the same way you would a natural tooth, and keep up with regular cleanings. The gums around an implant need care too. The crown on top can wear over time and may need to be replaced someday, even when the implant itself is doing well.
