Small Repairs That Keep Your Own Tooth
Dr. Monika Kaceli has a simple rule for cosmetic work: keep what nature gave you and fix only what needs fixing. Bonding fits that rule well. Instead of reshaping a healthy tooth to make room for a restoration, she adds tooth-colored material where it's missing.

For many people in Newton Centre and nearby towns, bonding is the first cosmetic treatment they try. It is a modest step, and it can make a front tooth you've been self-conscious about look like the rest of your smile.
What Bonding and Contouring Can Fix
Bonding uses composite resin, the same family of tooth-colored material used in modern fillings. It works best for small, specific problems:
- A chipped or cracked edge
- A narrow gap between two teeth
- A tooth that is shorter, pointier or more irregular than its neighbors
- Minor discoloration that whitening won't lift
Contouring is the shaping and smoothing step. Once the resin is in place, Dr. Kaceli sculpts it so the edges, curves and surface blend into the tooth around it.
Is Bonding the Right Choice?
A good candidate has healthy teeth and gums. If there is significant decay or gum disease, we treat that first, since bonding needs a sound surface to hold.
Bonding isn't always the best tool. A gap caused by crowding may close better with Invisalign aligners, and teeth with larger changes in color or shape may suit porcelain veneers. Dr. Kaceli reviews photos, scans and your main concerns before recommending one path. Our Newton office uses iTero and TRIOS 5 scanners for those digital records.
What Happens at Your Bonding Visit
Most bonding is finished in one appointment, and numbing usually isn't needed.
- Shade selectionDr. Kaceli matches the resin color to your natural tooth, looking at both shade and translucency.
- Surface preparationThe tooth is cleaned and prepared so the resin can bond firmly to it.
- LayeringResin goes on in thin layers. Each layer is set with a curing light before the next one is added.
- Contouring and polishThe bonded area is shaped, smoothed and polished so it reflects light like the teeth beside it.
- Bite checkWe check how your teeth meet so the repair feels normal when you chew.
Looking After Bonded Teeth
Bonding typically lasts somewhere between 3 and 10 years. Regular cleanings in Newton and exams let us keep an eye on it and polish or touch it up when needed.
Composite is strong, but it isn't as hard as enamel. Avoid biting ice, pens or fingernails, and don't use your front teeth to open packages. If you drink a lot of coffee, tea or red wine, rinsing with water afterward is a good habit.
