Getting Your Bite Back in Newton Centre
When several teeth are missing, everyday things get harder. You may avoid certain foods, chew on one side only, or keep your lips closed in photos. Dentures replace those teeth with a custom set made for your mouth.
Today's dentures come in more forms than many people expect. Some replace a handful of teeth and clip around the ones you still have. Others replace every tooth in an arch. Some rest on the gums, and others are held in place by dental implants.
Full and Partial Dentures
A full denture replaces all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. A partial denture fills in the gaps when some natural teeth remain.
Dr. Kaceli's habit is to keep healthy teeth whenever she can. If you still have strong teeth, a partial lets you hold onto them and replaces only what is missing. Those remaining teeth also give the partial something to hold onto.
Removable or Implant-Supported?
A removable denture sits on your gums and comes out for cleaning. It is usually the quicker and less involved option.
An implant-supported denture attaches to dental implants placed in the jaw. Because the implants hold it in place, many patients find it feels more secure when they eat and talk. It does take longer, since the implants need a few months to heal first, and your jawbone has to be able to support them. Learn more about dental implants in Newton.
Periodontist Dr. Milagros Serrano, DDS, whose focus includes implants and bone augmentation, is part of our team if bone work is needed first.
How Your Dentures Are Made
- ConsultationDr. Kaceli examines your mouth and talks with you about full or partial, removable or implant-supported, and what you want from your new teeth.
- ImpressionsImpressions of your mouth are taken so your dentures can be made to fit your gums and bite.
- FabricationYour dentures are made to match the shape and shade Dr. Kaceli plans with you.
- Fitting and adjustmentYou try them in, and Dr. Kaceli adjusts them until they sit comfortably. Follow-up adjustments are normal as your mouth settles.
If any teeth need to come out first, Dr. Kaceli will plan that as part of your treatment. See our page on tooth extractions.
Getting Used to New Dentures
New dentures take some practice. Speaking and chewing can feel strange at first, and sore spots are common in the early weeks. Starting with softer foods cut into small pieces helps.
Don't try to adjust a denture yourself. If something rubs or feels loose, call us and Dr. Kaceli will make the fix.
